In the last few years, African American natural hair has been celebrated for its beauty and stylish versatility. Women who have dedicated their entire lives to man-made chemicals and bone-straight hair, have abandoned their chic Euro look and have embraced a more all natural Afro chic style.
However, natural and Afro chic does not translate into meaning there is no work in the maintenance of this style. There is the misconception that natural hair is easier to manage than chemically treated hair, which is a myth and totally false. No matter what type of hair you have, regular maintenance is a requirement.
In order for you to have an idea of natural hair maintenance, I gathered information from a few women who grew their hair natural for at least two years and over. Many of these suggestions only work for some people, but they are still great tips for those who are interested in the process and what it entails.
General Tips to Promote Healthy Natural Hair
1. Wash your hair bi-weekly.
2. Retain moisture by applying conditioner as needed. (Shea Butter)
3. Deep Condition your hair at least once a month.
4. Twist and tuck the ends of your hair nightly.
5. Prevent shedding and hair loss by using protective styles such as braids, wigs, etc.
6. Maintain moisture at all times by spraying water on your hair daily.
7. It is advised that you also drink plenty of water, as being healthy means your hair is healthy.
8. Take multivitamins to ensure you maintain healthy hair, especially B-12.
9. Avoid heat when sporting natural hair because it is similar to relaxed hair, it can be damaged.
10. Avoid spending an exorbitant amount on specialty products. Women have had healthy natural hair before expensive boutique brands were created, don’t be compelled to go into debt trying to purchase the next best hair conditioner.
